Upgrade version in a Unified Development Environment

In the past, when managing environments from Lifecycle Services (LCS), we could apply version upgrades to our cloud-hosted environments with software deployable packages from the asset library.

In Power Platform admin center (PPAC) that won’t be how we do it.

If you remember when we deployed the UDE environment, what we did was install a Dynamics 365 app to the Dataverse environment.

And to apply a Dynamics 365 F&O version upgrade to our UDEs we will also do it through the Dynamics 365 apps section!

We can do this from two places.

Update from the environment page #

The first place we can do this from is the environment details page.

Go to your environment in PPAC, and the select Dynamics 365 apps under Resources:

You can do it from the top menu or the one on the bottom-right.

Then look for the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Provisioning app, click on the 3 dots next to it, and select Manage:

Manage F&O provisioning app
Manage F&O provisioning app

A dialog will ask for confirmation and take you to the update page:

Now you can select the version to which you want to upgrade your environment. After pressing the Install button the upgrade will trigger and after around 1h and 30m it will be ready.

By default, you will be able to upgrade to the latest Proactive quality updates of each major version.

But this method sometimes fails, or doesn’t display the Manage button on the provisioning app. That’s why there’s another method we’ll try. Thanks to Laze Janev and Aurélien Clere for this tip!

The alternative is going to the Manage > Dynamics 365 Apps menu on PPAC:

Dynamics 365 Apps section
Dynamics 365 Apps section

Here you need to go to the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Provisioning App entry that has the Configured status:

Configured app

The as we did from the environment, click the Manage option. A slightly different upgrade screen will open:

Upgrade UDE
Upgrade UDE

The only difference here is that you get to select the environment that you want to upgrade in the first step, and then can also choose to enable the dev tools and Contoso data, as we did in the deployment steps.

And that’s all, this is how you can upgrade a UDE environment from PPAC.
